NICHE-MED

Founded by AADMD in 2009, NICHE Medical originally started under the project name “National Curriculum Initiative in Developmental Medicine” (NCIDM). This program defines and integrates the concepts of Developmental Medicine into the medical school curriculum of medical schools in the United States.

THE GOAL OF NICHE MEDICAL IS…

to provide training to medical students in the field of developmental medicine & inspire a medical career focused on individuals with IDD across the lifespan.

The History of NICHE-MED

Bringing NICHE Medical to its current state has involved more than $2M of monetary investment from Special Olympics, the Walmart Foundation, the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, the North Carolina Mountain Area Health Education Center, the WITH Foundation and the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine.  It has involved the collaboration of organizations from around the United States and around the world including: the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the Australian Academy of Developmental Disabilities Medicine, and the Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association.  It has also involved the input of hundreds of clinical experts in the field, academicians, and thousands of learners.

Medical School Partners

NICHE Medical supports medical schools to implement curriculum about health care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through a multi-year partnership between the AADMD and Elevance Health.

NICHE-MED Away Rotation Scholarship Program

To provide training opportunities to medical students in the care of patients with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) across the lifespan, NICHE-MED is awarding scholarships up to $5,000 to support away rotations. Eligible rotations will immerse the medical student in an IDD-focused clinical teaching program.

NICHE-MED is creating a database of IDD-focused away rotations for interested medical students who wish to complete an away rotation and apply to become a NICHE-MED Scholar.

Request for Proposals

We will award Medical School Partners a $15,000 grant to implement curriculum enhancements that address gaps in medical education regarding patients with IDD.  AADMD believes it is essential to include self-advocates with IDD in curriculum efforts. Schools should be prepared to work with community partner(s) to ensure meaningful inclusion of self-advocates in curriculum development and delivery.
